Silence

The climb toward Renjo La Pass was a battle between extremes. The sun beat down with surprising intensity, yet snow covered the trail and the cold of the altitude remained in every breath.

With a forty-pound pack on my back, progress became almost invisible—one small step, then another. Then Everest appeared.

After the heat, cold, weight, and exhaustion, seeing the mountain rise across the horizon felt like a reward earned one step at a time. For a moment, everything became still.
